Japanese Calligraphy Experience in Kyoto: Create Your Kanji Name

Step into the world of shodo—the traditional art of Japanese calligraphy—through a hands-on cultural experience guided by me, Kiyoto.

Beneath the open Kyoto sky, this is your chance to slow down, focus, and feel the beauty of Japanese writing.

From the age of six, I was fascinated by the quiet ritual of preparing ink with a grinding stone—a task that most classmates found boring. While others gave up, I fell in love with the rhythm, the scent of ink, and the power of each brushstroke. I was so captivated that I quickly mastered all the characters taught in six years of elementary school within only a few months. That early passion has stayed with me ever since, and now I want to share this joy with you.

During our session, we will begin with the meditative process of preparing the ink. From there, I will guide you through the foundations of calligraphy: holding the brush, creating clean lines, mastering the techniques of stopping, sweeping, and balancing strokes. You will discover how a single brush movement can express both strength and elegance. While technique is important, my main goal is for you to enjoy the process. If you prefer precision, I will happily help you refine your strokes; if you prefer playfulness, we will embrace the joy of expression.

The highlight comes when we create your name in kanji. You may choose characters that match the sounds of your name or ones that reflect its meaning. After practicing, you will complete your final piece on fine calligraphy paper—a one-of-a-kind souvenir to take home. As a token of thanks, I will also gift you a handwritten version of your name, crafted with care and sincerity.

Everything you need will be prepared for you: brushes, ink, paper, and practice sheets. All you need to bring is your curiosity and a willingness to explore the beauty of Japanese writing.

Calligraphy is more than just drawing characters—it is a way of slowing down, focusing the mind, and expressing emotion through each line. Let’s share this timeless art together and create a memory that you will carry home not only on paper, but in your heart.

        • If the weather forecast is uncertain, you will be contacted at least 24 hours in advance.
